PAHIATUA COMPANY. ANNUAL MEETING. 1 The annual meeting of the Pahiatua Dairy Company was held at the Maugamutu Hall on Friday, Mr D. O’Brien 1 presiding over an attendance of over 40. j The report, which was adopted, statied. inter alia:—ln the creamery butter department it is possible to briim up the average payment for t'-ie months August to May to 9sd per lb. In moving the adoption of the report, the chairman said the company had done quite ns well as any factory he knew of, and better than a good few operating in the district. Mr O’Brien said it had been mooted amongst suppliers that it might be wise to put another representative of the butter department on the board of directors. That was a matter entirely in the hands of suppliers. If the meeting considered it desirable it was quite at liberty to make an additional appointment. The payments for the year, on the whole, had been very satisfactory indeed Mr A. P. Jensen seconded the motion.

At the request of the chairman the manager (Mr L. J. Heayns) gave a detailed list of comparative costs in connection with the running of the factory over the last six or seven years. These figures were very illuminating and showed how the cost of manufacture per ton-had been steadily reduced year after year. The costs to-day, he added, were down about as low as they could possibly get them. The report and balance-sheet were adopted practically without discussion. The retiring cheese directors, Messrs C. Isakson and W. Mangin, were, reelected unopposed. Mr L. Parker moved that an additional cream suppliers’ representative be appointed to the board of directors, but the motion was lost.

Mr G. F. Hoggard was re-elected as cream suppliers’ representative. Mr TV. C. Harrington was re-appointed auditor. Messrs Isakson, Mangin and Hoggard briefly returned thanks for th# r re-election. The meeting close with tributes to the staff and the Bank of New Zealand.

In the course of the meeting the secretary (Mr J. G. Brechin) made reference to Mr H. E. Davis, the London representative of the Dairy Produce Board. Mr Brechin said that Mr Davis happened to be his particular discovery for the dairy industry. He had worked with him previously in connection with freezing company business and when a London representative of the board was being sought and his opinion was asked he recommended Mr Davis to Mr TV. Goodfellow, urging that such a man without experience of the dairying industry might be preferable. Mr Davis was duly appointed and now he had brought forward marketing proposals which were quite revolutionary but which the speakoi thought were' going to be quite effective. His proposals had been entirely accepted by the Royal Commission. He had left these shores without experience, studied intensively, and returned as a world authority. Before he left New Zealand the only dairy company meeting which he had attended was at Papatawa, and that was by accident almost. Fanners could rest assured that Mr Davis was in the co-operative business for what he was putting into it.
