JUNIOR FINAL.

UNITED WIN ROGERS CUP. After experiencing very indifferent fortune in the early stages of the interclub competition, United built up a formidable force, and it became evident in tin* subsidiary competition that they would offer strong opposition to Old Boys, the junior champions. The two teams met in the final at the Showgrounds when enthusiasm ran high, United’s supporters being most enthusiastic as to the prospects of their fifteen.

As anticipated, the game was keenly contested, play being in progress some 25 minutes before the opening score came. Taking a clearance at the twenty-five line, Dickson set an Old Boys rearguard movement in action, and Payne sent on to Broad for the winger to cram on pace and side-step his way over for a good try. Robertson failed with the shot at goal. Stung to greater activity, the United members commenced to throw the ball about in enterprising style, and finally they gained their reward when, from one bout which went right to the line before being halted, Turner, the white half-back, dived over from a melee. C. Canton goaled and United retired at the interval holding a valuable two points lead. On resumption United forced matters for quite a period, but the blacks worked free and Dickson followed hard on a kick to be favoured by the bounce. He was tackled on the line to lose possession as he fell, but Irvine was handy to be granted the force. Robertson goaled and the tables had been turned. The blacks threatened danger on more than, one occasion in close succession until the whites transferred, some fast runs by their backs breaking down through the man in possession attempting to go too far ; such efforts deserved a better ending. Their winning points came in surprising manner when, with the blacks safely holding the opposition. Young burst through on a kick to snap the leather up and take a running shot at goal, the leather sailing straight and true. It brought the whites the victory and their onepoint margin prevented Old Bovs from winning the double. It was, nevertheless a fitting reward for the club spirit maintained by United in the face of adversity. United 9, Old Boys 8. Mr G. Duthie was the referee.
