SOVIET’S VIEW.
WILL DISCHARGE. OBLIGATIONS
“ONLY ONE QUESTION.”
GENEVA, Sept. 14. ‘I listened with particular interest and satisfaction to Sir Samuel lToare’s defence of collective security,” said M. Litvinoff in the League Assembly. “If the Council’s efforts fail and the dispute between Italy and Abyssinia comes before us, Russia will pass its judgment with impartiality and courage that will not be shaken by intimidation or abuse. “The Soviet is opposed to the system of colonies, spheres of influence or imperialism. For us there is only one question, the defence of the Covenant as an instrument of peace for use in ail cases of aggression. The Soviet will be second to none in loyally discharging its obligations. If, instead of a declaration of liberty of action, Italy came with a formal and well-founded complaint of Abyssinian acts of aggression, she would obtain justice and proof of our sympathy.” M. Litvinoff urged the necessity for a clear definition of what constitutes aggression. He also reminded delegates tliat if they wore sufficiently resolute they had the opportunity of making the present assembly a landmark in a new history of the League. MORE SUPPORT FOR LEAGUE. . declaring opposition to imperialistic aggression, M. Pouritch, Yugoslavian Premier, said he subscribed fully to the views of Sir Samuel Hoare and M. Laval, and added: “The Little Entente rejoiced that the principle of collective security, which is the foundation of the League, lias been so clearly brought out.” The Little Entente would do its whole duty in ensuring that the hopes reposed in the League were not disappointed. M. Maximos, Greek Foreign Minister, speaking for the Balkan Entente, Senor Moutero (Portugal), M. Haekzell (Finland) and Mr Ferguson (Canada) expressed similar views and pledged fidelity to the League.
