WOOL STEALING

SUGGESTED FUND FOR REWARDS

The suggestion that branches might be able to contribute £25 each toward the setting up of a fund to pay rewards to those giving information that would lead to the conviction of those suspected of stea'lng wool and sheep came before The Feilding Farmers’ • Union yesterday, from the Wellington central executive of the union.

The chairman (Mr J. H. Mason) said that whilst the idea was a good one the difficulty was for the branches to find the money. As far as the Feilding branch was concerned it did not have anything like this sum to spare and he considered it was a matter which the executive itself could deal with out of special funds. . Mr L. Knight agreed with the principle of the idea but could not see how it could be worked while, Mr McLeod said that although the idea commended itself it was useless the meeting discussing it if it had no money. Mr J. B. Bradley asked what had happened to the remit of the branch regarding the licensing of all wool buyers, claiming that if this was enforced and the buyer compelled to keep a record of all wool that he bought the trouble would cease. The secretary (Mr N. Penney) stated that lie had received a Ministerial reply to the effect that the request of the branch was being considered. Without further discussion, the letter from the executive was received, no action being taken.
