HOME MISSIONS
METHODIST CHURCH. In furtherance of the Methodist home mission enterprise, and following special services during Sunday at St. Paul’s Methodist Church and at Aokautere, successful concerts have since been held at these respective churches. On Monday a.t Aokautcre there was a good company present to hear Rev. B. E. Eordyce. of Sanson, give a very interesting talk on “Pages From a Parson’s Log.” The speaker told of his experiences, serious and otherwise, during his work in various places in New Zealand as a home missionary and minister. Contributors to the programme were as’ follow:—Song, John Andrews; duets, Mrs E. Lock and Mr L. Bycroft; song, Earl Andrews; recitations, Bev. A. N. Scotter and Mrs Hastings; violin solos, Mr E. Cosslett; song. Miss Joan Andrews. A very enjoyablo evening concluded with supper dispensed by the ladies • present. Arrangements for this were in the hands of Mesdames Hopcroft and Scott.
Aaign on Tuesday, there was a fair attendance at a concert held in St. Paul’s Methodist schoolroom, when excellent musical and elocutionary fare was provided by the Cuba Street Methodist choir. Bev. A. N. Scotter presided. Tho programme was as follow: —Glee, “Carnovale,” choir; song, “Mountain Lovers,” Mrs Coupe; recitation, “The Old Castle,” Miss V. Hansen; duet, “Play to Me Gypsy,” Misses Oottam and Cowlishaw; anthem, “Near My God to Thee,”'choir; song, “Admiral’s Broom,” Mr J. Perrin; recitation, “Mrs ’Arris on • the Farm,” Miss V. Hansen; song, “Love Will Find a Way,” Mrs Coupe; minuet song and dance, .Misses Whittaker, Cottam, and Cowlishaw. There wore, numerous encores. Mr Id. T. Pitcher ably conducted the choral items. As homo missionary delegate, Bev. J. H. Allen, of Feilding, delivered an earnest address appealing strongly for more devotion to the cause of home missions. In tho course of his remarks the speaker instanced cases where loyal support was needed by those engaged in a great fight amid much to discourage them. With years of experience in home missionary work, ami as a member of the Mission Board, lie
was able to urge the claims of tlic work which was and had boon during tho depression more insistent than ever. He entreated the wage-earner to look upon Iris givings as an investment in a great and glorious enterprise. At an interval Sir L. Bycroft gave a report of last year’s contributions to home mission funds, at Aokautero and at St. Paul’s, referring particularly to the help of the Bible classes and Sunday schools. Mr A. Tregurtha voiced thanks to the choir and conductor for a splendid programme, following which the choir gave a spirited rendering of the hymn. “Jesus Shall Reign.” Supper was dispensed to the visiting choir.
