SCHOOL COMMITTEES

MONTHLY MEETINGS. COLLEGE STREET SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the College Street School Committee was held last evening, Colonel J. H. Whyte presiding. Others present were Messrs H. G. Mills, A. D. Worboys. W. F. Cutler and H. Christmas (acting secretary). _ _ A motion of sympathy with Mr E. F. Hemingway (chairman of the Wanganui Education Board) in the recent passing of his daughter, was carried in silence the members standing. Mi ss B. J. Watkins, a member of the staff, wrote expressing her thanks for a motion of sympathy passed by the committee in the deatli of her father.—The letter was received.

The report of the headmaster (Mr W. A. Swinbourn), which was adopted, stated that the school had resumed that day, there being 21 new pupils, including 19 infants, enrolled. The roll at the e"d o'f the _ previous term had been 454, as against 447 at the corresponding period last year. The average for the term had been 416. Miss Meldrum had been acting in a relieving capacity. Miss Wapo had returned to dutv on August 22 and Miss Mclvor had left on August 23. Air Mills, on behalf of the Te Awe Awe Scouts, had presented the school with a framed enlarged photograph of the old school.

It was decided to thank (ho Te Awe Awe Scouts for the donation of the picture. Mr Mills said the gift had been prompted bv (he fact that for many, years the Scouts had been given the free use of the school for meetings.

Mr Christmas spoke in appreciation of the excellent state of cleanliness in which lie had found both the old and new schools when he paid a visit to them a week ago. Air Chrstmas said the caretaker (Air Gush) had made a commendable job of the two schools.

The chairman reported on the meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua School Committees’ Association, held recently, and stated also that the Wanganui Education Board had passed a motion. unanimously, against the disposal of the area on which the old school stood. Air Cutler suggested that as the committee would shortly have something really well worth beautifying, a schedule of works should lie drawn up so that they would have something dofinite to work for. The grounds about the new school could be made a picture. The chairman thought that the committee might well d°f“r tlie_ drawing up of any such schedule until it was definitely known how much the Education Board would do at the new school.

AH Christmas thought that the committee might spend an hour making an in«nectinn of the surroundings of the school with the purpose of deciding where a new cycle shed should he erected.

It was agreed that the chairman interview the architect of the Wanganui Education Board ami endeavour fo arrange for him to he present when the inspection is made. HOKOWKTTU SCHOOL. | HIGHER CAPITATION SOUGHT. The monthly meeting of the Hokowhitu School Committee was held last evening, Mr P. Y. Burns presiding.

Others present were Messrs S. F. Collier, G. S. Alelville, K. W. Jones, H. IV. Cox, E. D. Tucker, and W. M. Huntingdon. The acting-headmaster (Air C. Haydon) reported that the average roll for the past month was 317.2 and the average attendance 293.2. The pupils had asked that their thanks he conveyed to Mr Burns for donating a tin of sweets on breaking-up day. The Education Board, replying to a request recently made by the committee for an increased capitation grant, stated that it realised that the amount at present made available ’to city schools was quite inadequate for ail major purposes, and was making representations to the Minister to have the allocation increased. The committee’s request had been forwarded to the Minister. The chairman said it was realised that the board could do no more than allocate as fairly as possible the amount it received from the department. He expressed the hope that Hon. 8. G. Snith would, rea’ising the difficulties of education hoards, obtain more generous treatment for them. The committee resolved to write to Air Kingsbeer thanking him for donating a Norfolk pine, and to Air J. J. Stevenson thanking him for an Arbor Day address.
