RACING NEWS

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) It is reported that GiggJeswick has boon sent home to the West Coast. The Wellington Racing Club has decided that its spring meeting next month shall be a two-day fixture, and will not use the third day permit, at present. New Zealand owners figuring in the list of winners in Australia for last season arc Air J. AlcDougall £4495, Air W. R. Kcmball £3489, and Mr W. T. Hazlett £2290. Tho death is reported of the brood mare Diamond Ring (Kilboy—Hope Diamond). Diamond Ring was a good performer in the colours of Mr 11. M. Campbell, and among her victories was tho Douro Cup of 1923.,, She was bred by Mr Campbell, but as a brood mare was owned by Air W. S. Glenn Red Lance (11. Anderton) and Bell Hill (T. White) wore schooled over three flights of hurdles at Wingatui the other day. Red Lanco shaped the better of the two, but 801 l Hill shaped well. Bell Hill seemed a trifle soro when coming back to tho saddling shed. A newcomer to the tracks at Ellorsho is a three-year-old chestnut filly by Speardance from Jolle Fillc, owned by her breeder, Mr J, D. Kemp. This novice comes from a proved racing family, being a halfsislor to Alaveelish, Jolly Gay, and Jolie Aloney. She is very “green” at present and it will be a few months 'before she is ready to race. It "is probable that Notium, by Lysander from Alakepeace, who is trained by J. Brown at Hawora, will he sent t,o Australia. He was purchased at the last Trcntham yearling sales by two Elthani sportsmen, Aiessrs E. L. Abbott and H. B. Gibson, for 260gns, and is stated to be a very promising sort. The latest addition to tho activo brigade at Ellerslie is the threc-ycar-old filly Eudorace, by Tho Aec from _ Duchess Euclorus. She was raced several times last season without success. Eudorace is a halfsister to Royal Tea and Deputy Ruler. The apprentice rider G. Nicholas, who is attached to J. Cruso’s stable at Takanini, is leaving for Fiji in a couple of weeks’ time. On arrival there ho will join up with Air D. B. Costello, of Suva, who recently purchased several horses in New Zealand with the view of racing them m Fiji. Nicholas rode Trishna when that horse won the Easter ITandicaprn at Fci filing last April and he should do well in the Islands. A suggestion that tho steeplechaser Witui had been cruelly treated when lie was ridden after a fall at tho last. Grand National mooting was under discussion last week at a meeting of tho general commiteo of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Witui fell at a fence, was then mounted by a spectator, and later fell again, injuring his spine so that ho had to bo destroyed. Alcmbers considered that if there had been cruelty, it had not been intentional, ana the subject was dropped. Keith Voitre has given many fine exhibitions of riding in Alelbournc, but it is doubtful if ho has ever been seen to more advantage than when he landed Metro the winner of the mile and aquarter Nerrin Nerrin Handicap at tho V.A.T.C. meeting a fortnight ago (says a Alelbourne critic). From a good start Metro soon took up the running and led from Cardo, Villius, and Rightspear. Nearing tho straight entrance Cardo ran past Metro, who looked beaten, Voitre, however, was saving him for one short, sharp run, and though Pqroival rode Cardo desperately to the finish lie could not stall off the New Zealander, who in the last stride landed Metro winner by a short head. Metro, though now owned by Aiessrs AV. J. Pelham and C. F. Taylor, was formerly one of Air AV. K■ Kembail s numerous team. Ho is a five-year-old chestnut gelding by Chief Ruler from Kilboy’s. sister Kilteel, and lie is thus a half-brother to Plato, who is expected to play a prominent part in this year s Dominion classics for Mr T. 11. Lowry. He cost Mr Kembail 160 guineas as a yearling and he was passed on to his present owners at a substantial profit as a two-vear-old after ho had won his first race. Ho did not score again till this year, but lately lie lias won several races.
