The former tried to force his way over, but was penalised. Hawke’s Bay continued to press resolutely, but the Wanganui backs got away in a rush which ended when Chase was grassed by Rolls. AVELLINGTON, Sept. 4. The New Zealand Rugby Union tonight refused to adjudicate as to whether AVellington, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, or Ashburton have the right to meet Canterbury for the Ranfurlv Shield on September 28 on the grounds that it could only exercise its powers when there was a dispute between the holders and challengers, and no evidence was before the committee of such a dispute. The Taranaki Union, however, advised that it had entered a challenge and was prepared to play on any date after September 18. It was decided to advise Taranaki that Canterbury indicated that September 28 was the only available date, and to ask if this date is suitable, the Tara-

naki members being under the impression that Taranaki were due to meet Auckland on that day. Air E.
