SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY.

PALMEKSTON NORTH’S PETITION

(By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.’) WELLINGTON. Aug. 30. Palmerston North led the way in petitioning Parliament in favour of the universal Saturday half-holiday, Mr J. A. Nash this afternoon presenting a formidable petition carrying nearly 5000 signatures in its favour. It stated that the half-holiday in the retail trade is observed on Wednesdays and Saturdays in various towns, according to the vote of the district, and that by making the holiday universal on Saturdays great inconvenience would be obviated and an unbroken shopping week would result.
