TRADE WITH INDIA.

DIRECT AUSTRALIAN SHIPPING SERVICE.

The acting Prime Minister of Australia (Dr. Earle Page) stated recently that he had been advised by the agents in Australia of the British Indian Line that the company proposed to inaugurate a direct twomonthly shipping service between Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Fremantle, and ports of the Bay of Bengal, as from the beginning of 1936. Cargo would be carried at direct rates of freight which would ensure a considerable saving to Australian shippers, obviating the extra costs involved by transhipment at either Colombo or Singapore. Dr. Page said that a direct regular service would fulfil a long-felt want, and would assist Australian exporters to build up a greater volume of export trade with British India and Burma. Dr. Page said that the latest statistical information available showed that trade between India and Australia in the last three years had been as follows : Imports from Exports to India. India. (Aust. (A list, currency.) c u rrenev .) 1931- £3,469.i95 £959,497 1932- 4,278.879 831,470 1933- 3,057,726 610,109
