LINTON.
(From Our Own Cor respondent.) LINTON, Aug. 26.
On Friday evening one of the largest gatherings held in Linton took place for the purpose of farewclling Mr and Mrs M. A. Moody, who have been residents of this district for a long period of years and who are now about to live in retirement in Palmerston North. The hall was crowded, indicative of the regret of the settlers at the departure of the guests and their appreciation of the splendid assistance Mr and Mrs Moody have always willingly given in uli objects of local benefit. Testifying to the popularity of the guests were addresses which were made by Mr J. A. Nash and Mr Linklatcr, M.P.’s, prior to the presentation. In paying a high tribute to Mr and Mrs Moody’s generous help, Mr Jos. Batehelar, in making the presentation on behalf of the district residents, asked Air Moody to accept a wallet and Mre Aloody an electric kettle, also a combined present of a beaten brass fire screen, fender, etc. Air Batehelar wished Air and Airs Aloody long happy years of well-earned retirement in their new home. All- Moody suitably replied. Both Air and Airs Aloody have witnessed extensive development of the district, and have contributed in no small measure to it. Air Aloody was a member of the Kairanga County Council for a good number of years, and was also at one time a member of the local hall and school committees and the Linton Sports Club. During the evening, a recitation was given by Air A K Eising, of Palmerston North. Alost of the time was spent in dancing, the music being supplied by Air Caple. Winners of the novelty dances were Air 0. Batehelar and Aliss M. Sinmionds and Air Aludgway and Miss Al. Carr. At the conclusion of the gathering musical honours were accorded Air and Airs Aloody. The friends of Airs R. Coker, who is an inmate of a private hospital in Palmerston North, will bo ptcusod to learn that she is making a goud recovery from her recent operation, and is expected to return home shortly. The Women's Institute committee meeting was held last week, when competitions were arranged for the next meeting. They arc for something new from something old. An egg drive will also lie held; members arc asked to bring any number of eggs which are to be forwarded to the children’s homes. The points competition for the day will be for the best design for a banner. Final arrangements were made for the concert and dunce to he held early in September. Several accounts in connection with the A. and P. Show' and the Drama Festival were passed for payment. Mrs Lynch was appointed the delegate to attcricl the week-end drama school in Palmerston North. The school closed on Friday for the second term holidays.
Airs Gilbert, of Aknroa, is visiting Linton and is the guest of Airs L. Craw. Airs K Russell and Aliases Audrey and Nao. Russell are spending a fortnight’s holiday in To Kuiti. The Linton girls’ basketball team played a friendly match against the Tokomaru team which resulted in a draw, 13-all. The match was played on the Linton ground and Aliss Ross refereed. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea.
