EDUCATION BOARD
THE AA’ANGANUI DISTRICT. The AA’anganui Education Board met yesterday, Air E. F. Hemingway' presiding. There were also present Rev. G. S. King, Messrs It. Dukeson, )'. Alunro, J. Iv Hornblow, A. S. Coleman and Colonel J. H. AVhyte. The board decided to adhere to the departmental rule that when schools were not required as polling booths no holiday bo observed oil election dav.
I’he Bulls Committee forwarded the following resolution: “That this committee record the desirability of grading schools oil the average roll number and not, as at prosent, on the average attendance.” The chairman: The Minister is considering the matter. The Auditor-General returned the hoard's balance-sheet for 1934 certified ns correct, and the matter was the subject of complimentary references by the board to the secretary (Mr G. N. Boulton) and members of the staff.
It was decided to approve of the League of Nations schoolbook for use by teachers who care to use it. The following resignations of school teachers were accepted : —Teachers leaving the board’s service: Airs AI. Eggers, head teacher, AY’hakarongo; Aliss I. Hill, sole teacher, Alain South Road; Aliss O. Le Couteur, assistant, Rongotea; AUss B. Howie, assistant, Taihape D.H.; Aliss I. Fenwick, relieving staff; Miss Iv. Knowles, relieving staff. Teachers appointed to other Sositions in board’s service: Air L. dlls, sole teacher, Aluru Alum; Aliss E. Ashby, assistant. Palmerston North Central; Aliss Al. Robinson, sole teacher, Denlnir; Aliss M. Bowler, sole teacher Ohutu.
The chairman reported confirmation of the following appointments: —Mr R. N. Finlay, head teacher, Ashhurst; Aliss M. Bowler, solo teacher, Turangarere; Mr J. N. Little, sole teacher, Pakihikura; Air L. J. Hills, sole teacher, Ilidge Road: Aliss AT. A. Arlidge, sole teacher, Awaliou South-; Mr P. R. Bryers, sole teacher, Alangamnhu; Aliss G. Bayfield, infant mistress, Castlecliff; Aliss E. AlcConnon, assistant, Kohi; Miss E. Ashbv, assistant, Afilson’s Line; Aliss AI. Robinson, assistant, Upokongaro; Air D. Priest, sole teacher, Alakakohi Rond.
A grant was received from the department for metalling a portion of tlie grounds at the Foxton District High School. The committee at Tangiinoana asked that a iiermanent school building he erected. The matter was held over until the next meeting, as Air Hemingway said ho intended to visit the locality in the meantime and would report to the board. The architect recommended that a fuel shed be erected at Poliangina.
Three years ago the board decided to remove the asbestos tiles from the roof of the main building at Foxton and to cover the structure with iron. One-half was treated, and the architect suggested that the remaining portion should be similarly dealt with. The estimated cost was £l5O, onethird of which is covered by subsidy. Colonel Whyte asked if it would be possible to put two of the folding doors, which he understood were available, between two of the rooms at College Street School, so that the room could be used for large meetings.—lt was decided to accede to the request. Air Hemingway remarked that it was a distinct compliment to Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, that she was selected to represent the Health Department at the medical conferences in Alelbourne.
