EXTRA EXPENSE.

SLIPS IN KIWITEA COUNTY. “I regret to say that the continuous wet wmather is causing quite a considerable amount of extra expense in maintenance, although all roads with few exceptions are kept open for traffic in a reasonably fair condition,” stated :Mr F. H. Eggers, country overseer, ! in his report to the monthly meeting of the Kiwitea County Council at Kimbolton yesterday. I “In the Hautapu riding,” Mr Egj gers continued, “ we have again had considerable trouble with slips, necessitating the employment of a number of extra men. Quite a number of new slips came down on the section of No, 52 main highway; also on the Upper Kawhatnu roads. The Cliff Road near the Mnngaweka bridge is at present very clear of clips. A subsidence of the road took place on the clay section adjoining the Lagoon Road near Sweet’s bridge. This damage has since been repaired by widening the road to a 6ft track for horse traffic. Several large slips came down on the Auputa clay road last week, and the road has since been opened for horse traffic. On the metalled section of the Manaia Road the recent heavy rain storm caused quite a considerable amount of damage and I have found it necessary to erect two fairly long breastworks for protection of traffic, the work being well in hand.” In the Rangiwahia riding storm water damage and slips had also caused trouble, and in practically . every other rifling, the clearing of numerous slips had caused extra work and expense. On the main highway near Rewa it would be necessary to construct a stone groyne to protect the bridge from further erosion. A large landslide on Marshall’s Road, in the Pahihikura riding, had given, and was still giving, a lot of trouble, but with an improvement in the weather condition* Mr Eggers expected to have the genera] situation in hand shortly.
