MAItTON, Aug. 20

The worst spell of wintry weather for many years was experienced during the week-end. over four inches of rain falling between last Tuesday and yesterday, compared with an average rainfall for the whole month ot August of 3.19 inches. Details of the rainfall over the last few' days are as follow:—l3th, .46; 14th, .45; loth, .44; 16th, .65; 17th, .58; 15th, .73; 19th. .71. William Street was under water last evening, the properties of Messrs A. C. M. Sieely and T. E. Barton being immersed. The water flowed across to the rear of Mr J. Wales’s house, and flooded some ot tho rooms, and also surrounded Mr K. Rivers’s home to a depth of some inches. For half an hour there was a small river running down the northern side of High Street. The park was it sea of water for some time, and there was a stream trickling across the road at tho Follett Street gate. It was over two feet deep at the rear ot premises in Broadway. The committee of the Marton Harrier Club met hist evening fot the purpose of dealing with a point which arose under the rules of the club relative to last Saturday’s race for the Riinnyincde Cup. Alter a lull discussion iii which opinion was divided, it was decided to adhere strictly to the rules and K. Kerr is thus deprived of the cup, which will go to the second man. R. Parkinson. 'The point was raiseo by Mr D. Alacpherson, who said that rule 23 stipulated that a competitor must compete in four qualifying runs before being eligible to compete in a trophy race. Mrs Stephen Crawford, Wellington, who has been the guest of her parents, Mr and Mrs J. F. Miles, Queen Street, has now returned home.
