THE WOOL MARKET

WINTER SALE AT WELLINGTON. CROSSBRED CRUTCHINCS SELL WELL. WELLINGTON. Aug. 21. Considerable interest centred yesterday in the winter wool salo hold by the Wellington Wool Brokers’ Association. The offering was an unusually large one, totalling 4873 bales, comprising 2996 bales of crutchings and 1877 bales of fleece wool. There was a large, and, for the time of year, a fairly representative bench of buyers. Competition, especially for crutchings, was very active, and a number of the buyers filled gome fairly largo orders. Crossbred crutchings brought the highest prices, the, best making from 7d up to 7gd. Halfbrcd and Merino crutchings were not greatly sought after, and many lots were passed in, the bidding for these sorts being somewhat erratic. In view of the improvement in thc_ wool market during the last few months, it had been expected that there woidd be a good sale for fleece wools. Bidding, however, was not particularly keen, and in many caries it was plain that growers’ ideas of values were well in excess of buyers’ limits, with the result that there were many passings. Best. Merino fleece wools, of which there was only a small offering, made lOd to 123 d. Halfbreds brought 93d to ll|d. In crossbreds, average 46-48's, made 8d to BJd, 44-46's 73d to Bd, and 40-44’s 63d to 7id.

OFFICIAL RANGE OF PRICES.

, BROKERS’ REPORTS. The following reviews of the sale are supplied by the brokers: — LEVIN AND CO., LTD. Our offering was 1050 bales. There was a good attendance of buyers. The greater proportion of the offering consisted of crutchings. Crossbred crutchings realised' the highest prices, the best selling at from 7d to 73d. On the other hand, halfbrcd and Merino crutchings do not quite fit consumers’ requirements, and were carrying heavy condition. The prices bid were therefore comparatively disappointing. Bidding came from all quarters, particularly from Japan. The bulk of the crossbred fleece offered was only of average quality, and growers’ anticipations on many of the larger lots were not realised. DALGETY AND CO., LTD.

The quality and condition of the crutchings offered this year was superior to any offerings that have been. brought forward during the past three seasons. Some of the llccee wools offered were of exceptionally good quality, being comprised ol clips that, had been held over from last season without being offered. Unfortunately, there did not appear to be many solid orders on hand for good quality fleece of counts ranging from 46's to 48’s, but any lines showing a finer count of from 50-56 s brought forward quite sound competition, the principal buyer of such wools being France. There was a very keen and excited demand for crossbred crutchings, the sale for such wools being dominated by Australia and America. The former buyers predominated, and probably Australia took 70 per cent, of the good quality crossbred crutchings offered. Japanese competition was not so pronounced as in tho past three seasons, but fortunately America took the place of Japan and was prepared to take, not only the good class of crutchings, but also the lower grades of medium and inferior quality. A largo proportion of the fleece wools offered carried owners’ high reserves, with the result that a fair percentage of such wools were passed in at auction. The clcaiancc of crutchings and oddments was good. 11l our catalogue wo brought forward tho largest offering of 1103 bales and were ablo to soil practically all the crutchings and oddments, but passed a fair proportion of the fleece wools. ihc top mice of the sale for crossbred clutching was 73d, and in our catalogue wo were successful, with other brokers in obtaining this price for the first crutchings of the well-known Anchor brand, our other outstanding sales being: 3 bales first crutchings, account Estate W. Andrews, Mastorton, 7id; next best price being “Cindcrhill,” “Gluny . Hills, “Arota,” “Ruanui” first crutchings at 7id. In halfbred crutchings the well-known “Fvvie” brand made 7d. Fine wools of 50 quality upward were in more demand, principally owing to French competition, and such wools were generally dearer when compared with last Wellington April sale's prices. boutlidown of which there was a small ottoiing, brought forth good competition, and hero again prices improved as compared with Wellington April rates.- Good-class bellies and pieces were inquired for and sold readily at satisfactory prices. Summing the salo up generally,_ crossbred crutchings from super to inferior brought very satisfactory prices. Fleece wools of inferior quality were firm at last April rates, but good-ittylc wools were inclined to be neglected. Out of our catalogue of 1103 bales, we sold 900 bales by auction, and since the saLo have

sold a further 3 per cent, by private treaty.

Fleece wool, of which wo had quite a good offering, mot with very keen demand, prices being fully Id to 1 2 ( 1 per lb, up on tho closing rates of last, season.

N.Z. LOAN AND MERCANTILE AGENCY.

An unusually largo offering for winter erutching sales attracted a full and representative bench of buyers. Competition for crutchings was exceptionally keen, especially for tho coarse lots, but the finer halfbred crutchings were not so eagerly competed for, and prices for these were rather disappointing. For fleece wool, while orders seemed to bo in the market, limits were lower than expected, with tho result that a largo proportion of the fleece offering was passed unsold. Our top price for crutchings was 7jd per lb, while for other good lots 6id to 7d was common. N.Z. FARMERS’ CO-OP. DISTRIBUTING CO. There were representatives from Bradford, Canada, Japan, tho Continent, and the Dominion mills, all of whom competed freely for their various requirements. Tho total offering was 4873 bales, of which our catalogue comprised 923 bales, all of which, with the exception of fleece wools and lamlts’ wool, was quitted. _ The bulk of the catalogue comprised crutchings, together with a few parcels of fleece wool, not sufficient of the latter to warrant special quotations or to give any guide of market prospects. Fleece wool and lambs’ wool met with very restricted competition, and in many eases failed to reach valuations. Generally speaking, the crutchings opened up in splendid order, and commanded spirited bidding, and realised prices above expectations. We quote: —Crossbred crutchings, good to super, 7d to 73d; rne- , diutn, 53d to b3d; seedy and inferior, 33d to 53d; crossbred, belies and pieces, 4d to 63d; lambs, 73d to 93d; dead, 5d to 63d; locks, 4d to 43d.
