Mr Abbott’s father took up land at Horokiwi Valley, in 1854, eight years after the Maor trouble of 1846, some of the engagements having been fought on his property, which bears the name “Battle Hill,” called after an action which took place there. Mr Abbott was a member of several local bodies, and was one of the foundation members of the Farmers’ Union.
