WHIROKINO HIGHWAY.

INSPECTION BY OFFICIALS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, July 20. As the result cf a conference last week between Mr J. Linklatcr, ALP., and Messrs W. E. Barber (chairman of the Alanawatu County Council) and 11. V. Bond (engineer), when a thorough inspection of the Whirokino highway was made and the swamp and river bank routes traversed. Air Linklatcr made arrangements with Highways Board and Public Works officials to make an inspection of the area in its present inundated state. This inspection took place yesterday, when Mr C. J. McKenzie (chairman of the Alain Highways Board), Mr Noman (secretary), Air H. H. Sharp (district engineer), and Air A. It. Acheson (Public Works Department engineer) uvcrc met in conference in Foxton with Alessrs J. Linklatcr, ALP., W. E. Barber, 11. V. Bond, and A. K. Drew. After discussing the highway an inspection of the Whirokino was made, the present road being traversed from Foxton to the Whirokino bridge, thus giving the visiting ollicials some idea of the very bad state of the road as a result of the constant Hooding of recent months. The proposed alternative route around the river bank was pointed out ami Air Linklater urged on the Highways Board chairman the necessity for some immediate work being carried out to improve and safeguard the road in the interests of the motorists and all who use' tho No. 1 main highway. Air AlcKenzic agreed with Air Linklatcr that the work of improving the highway would have to be proceeded with without any undue delay. lie realised that the Whirokino was tho weakest link in the whole highway chain and something would have to ho clone to improve it. The main concern at tho moment, however, was the deciding on of the most suitable route. Surveys of the various proposals submitted had now been completed by his surveyors and would be placed before tho engineers forthwith. These would be carefully eon sidered in order that no mistake should bo made, and lie hoped to be able to make a definite announcement at an early date.
