AVOODVILLE, July 17. Air J. Elder occupied the chair at tho annual meeting this week of tho AVoodvillo branch of tho Hawke’s Bay War Relief Association. The annual report stated, inter alia:—“The branch continues to do its best in an unbiassed manner for all returned men who seek help by way of loans or grants. Assistance lias been given to unemployed returned soldiers during the past year. Since tho inception of the association the sum of £18,914 has been distributed in tlie AVoodville district, comprising £2936 in grants and £15,978 in loans.” Tho election of officers saw Alessrs J. Elder, AY. A. Lyon, F. D. Mackie, T. If. Williams and AY. Galbraith returned unopposed. Air AA'illiams was appointed tlie delegate to tho executive meeting to he held in Napier next week. The chairman intimated that a motion was coming before the annual meeting of delegates whereby it was proposed to amalgamate several of tho smaller brandies with tlie bigger ones, and under tlie proposal AVoodville would ho amalgamated with Dannevirkc. The matter was discussed and it was unanimously decided that tlie AA’oodvilie branch protest strongly against any such amalgamation. A recommendation was also passed to be forwarded to the annual meeting of delegates that it be a recommendation to the meeting that all salaried positions he held by Great AA'ar veterans, all things being equal, as the funds were expressly collected for their benefit. A letter was received from the local branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association in which their committee strongly protested against the proposed amalgamation with Daunevirke. A vote of thanks was accorded the chairman, Mr J. Elder, for his good work both as chairman of the committee and as a member of tlie executive in Napier. A vote of thanks was also accorded the secretary. Football and basketball teams from the Rahiatua School journeyed to AVoodville on Saturday to meet tho AVoodville School’s teams. Both the High School and primary department teams were represented and both football matches went to the home team, the High School boys winning by 6 points to 3, and the primary by 27 to nil. At basketball tho local High School girls were defeated by 10 goals to 13, and tlie primary teams played a draw, each side scoring 10 goals.
