AN UNCERTAIN RECORD.
NO DEFINED SUPERIORITY. From 1925 to 1931 Horowhenua and Manawatu have mot in home and home matches eacli season, and it was the former’s superior playing strength, when led by H. Jacob, which was largely responsible for the amalgamation of the two unions for representative purposes. In 1925 each union won one game, but 12 months later Horowhenua's superiority was definitely marked, Manawatu having to submit to two severe reverses. Again in 1928 the southern union won at both meetings, although tiro margins were not so pointed. Tnf1.930 Manawatu turned the, tables, for after winning 10—3 a t Levin, they piled up 37 points to three at the return meeting—the largest scoring which has been registered in the inter-union clashes. The pendulum again swung in Horowhenua’s favour in 1931, only for it to “reverse gears” at, the first meeting in 1932 when Manawatu ran up 33 points to 9. The severity of that defeat pointed to Manawatu being definitely superior, but on journeying to Levin they found the southerners a more formidable combination on their home ground and the game resulted in a draw, 19—19. Both meetings in 1933 brought successes to
Manawatu, the totals once again varying considerably, while the one meeting last season added a six points victory to the greens’ account to bring the records of the two unions on terms. Saturday’s success at Levin now gives to Maninvatu tho advantage for the first occasion in tho history of the meetings. The complete record or the matches is:— 1925—Horowhenua, 16^6. Manawatu, 10—5.
