AIR LINER CRASH.
COOLNESS AND COURAGE. LONDON, July 15. The Daily Telegraph’s Amsterdam correspondent says that outstanding coolness and courage was shown by a steward and the 13 passengers who escaped from the air-liner which crashed when taking off for Sweden. Although fire broke out a few seconds after the impact, they left quietly and without panic. Two passengers sitting in the fore-part of the machine, like the crew, were killed instantly. A survivor, Mr Petersen, declared : The engines were running normally when we took off. One appeared to fail within a few seconds of leaving the ground. The pilot attempted to land, and when only a few feet up hit a dyke, forcing open the door. The passengers helped each other from the ’plane. A Norwegian passenger, M. Terscliaw, corroborated Mr Petersen s story, and paid a tribute to the helpfulness £>f the steward. Mr Petersen also paid a tribute in the highest terms to the skill of the pilot, Herr Silbertstein, in landing the ’plane. Silbertstein, a German, flew Deutsche Lufthansa ’planes for four years, but was obliged to transfer to the KLM because he is a Jew. The wrecked machine recently collided with a guiding lamp-post at Crovdon, when it was seriously damaged.
