PARKING AREAS.
SEVERAL CHANGES MADE. Dealing with the matter of rural motor bus and service car stands in his report to last evening’s meeting of the Palmerston North City Council, the traffic manager (Mr H. J. Smith) recommended that additional Bpace be provided on the eastern and northern sides of No. 3 garden in the Square (the garden in which the statue of the Rangitane chieftain, Peeti Te Awe Awe, is placed). That should meet requirements for some time to come, it was stated. The report proceeded: “I would also recommend that the rural parking area on the eastern side of No. 4 garden (nearest the City Council offices) be made a parking for private cars. This would help to offset the space taken for the rural service at present used as a parking area for private cars. “In connection with this matter, an alteration to our present by-laws will be necessary. While the alteration is being made it would be advisable for the council to have power to allot the rural stands to definite vehicles as may be required, as is done at present with the taxi stands.
“Regarding the Church Street taxi stand, I would suggest that consideration be given to removing this to the southern side of garden No. 3, which is at present a private parking area and that the 1 present taxi stand lie made a private parking area. This .would result in No. 3 garden being occupied by licensed vehicles on three sides, and all would be adjacent to the Post Office and close to the rural service stand.”
The transit committee supported the recommendations, and the report was adopted.
