CAR’S 100 FT. FALL. WAIMANA GORGE MISHAP. WHAKATANE, June 24. Three Maoris, who were returning to Ruatoki from a football match at Waimana on Saturday night, went over a bank in their car when coming down a hill into the Waimana Gorge. The car stopped to allow a car with powerful headlights to pass. Visibility was bad and the edge of the road was misjudged, the car plunging into the river about a hundred feet below. Ail of the occupants were injured, but one of them crawled up to the road and signalled a passing car, the driver of which went to the nearest telephone and rang for a doctor and police. Meanwhile settlers in the vicinity extricated the remaining vpien from the wrecked car. A doctor found the native who had reported the accident to he suffering from strained muscles in his back. Tiki received severe scalp wounds, and the driver, C. Ivaaha, a slight fracture of the base of the skull. The two latter were removed to the Whakatane Hospital, and they are reported to be making, satisfactory progress. The police had extreme difficulty in getting Kaaha up to the road as he was unconscious. A sledge had to be used.
