OTAKI MEETING.

BIG HANDICAP TO LAPEL. REFRESHER TAKES THE SPRINT. A very largo holiday crowd was in attendance at Levin yesterday for the concluding day of the Otaki Maori Racing Chib’s winter meeting, the totalisator accommodation being too limited to cope with the demands of investors. However, the club observed the time schedule faithfully, and despite the possible loss which resulted thereby, the sum of £11,419 10s was handled as against £10,516 for the corresponding day last year, making a grand total of £17,914 10s, which marked an increase of £2lOl 10s over 1934. Lapel, the runner-up to Walton Park in the principal handicap on the opening day, improved to win the Ta Timi Kara Handicap from Eminent and Full Throttle, while the sprint honours went to Refresher, with the promoted hack Dick Whiti tington and Croupier attending him. AIR LADDIE AGAIN. The field for the Pukchou Hack Hurdles was weakened by the defection of Esteem and Affliction, and the first day’s winner, Air Laddie, was made a £2O better favourite than Diamond, the pair finishing as backed. Petrarch, Enif, and Diamond went to the front to take the first fence together where Enif fell. Diamond leading through the straight. Air Laddie joined Diamond at the five furlongs post, and the favourite had a slight advantage at the straight entrance, Arctic Star being two lengths back. Diamond had been jumping erratically, and over the final pinch Air Laddie drew away to win by two and a half lengths from Diamond with Arctic Star a length and a half back. FROM A GOOD FAMILY. Merlyn and Popetto were the fancies for the Waikanae Scurry, but a half-sister to those former good performers, Oratrix and Concentrate, Oratory, who was having her first race, displayed superior class and won comfortably from the other pair. Alerlyn, Oratory, and Nightlass were the smartest to begin, False Witness for whom there was surprisingly strong support, being one of the last to move. Crossing the top Merlyn and Oratory wore together, but the latter .drew clear approaching the straight entrance and she stayed there to the close, winning by two and a half ' lengths from Merlyn with Popetto a short length back. Count Roussillon and Kitty Quinn followed at intervals. MIGHT’S POOR DISPLAY. Might, the favourite from Lapel for the Ta Timi Kara Handicap, gave a very indifferent showing, being beaten half a mile ! from home and he dropped to the rear to be a long way back at the finish. Favoured with a better run than on the opening day, Lapel won from the little landed Eminent. Saltspray showed the way to Full Throttle, Might, Pladic, and Lapel going through the straight and they raced in that order into the back and to the five furlongs post, where Full Throttle joined Saltspray and then took charge crossing the top. However, Lapel ran up fast to be with Full Throttle at the straight entrance, while Eminent also put in a challenge. In the run home Lapel held his place to win by three lengths from Eminent, who got up to beat Full Throttle for second place by a neck. Lady Ronald and Saltspray wore next. ROYAL BANQUET IMPROVES. Boudoir, the first day’s winner, was again installed favourite tor the Rangiuru Hack Handicap—the distance event —with good support tor Royal Banquet, who was expected to bo improved by his race of the opening day. The latter did so to win very comfortably from Boudoir. Aussie lta, Gold Mission, and To Itangitumau raced to the front going through the straight, the latter working clear turning into the back stretch, Boudoir being filth in the running. Crossing the top Royal Banquet, who had been lying in behind the loading trio, moved up to take charge, Te Rangitumau dropping back to the rear in a furlong. Royal Banquet was the first to straighten up from Gay Boy, Gold Mission, and Tupurangi, and the leader strode away to win with case by two and a half lengths. Boudoir secured a late opening in the straight to finish very fast in second place a head in front of Tupurangi. , REFRESHER SCORES. The Tiger, favourite for the Taipua Handicap, failed badly after being well placed early and was actually the last to finish, his fellow-Taranaki representative Refresher being the winner. The Tiger and Bodyline were the first to move Horn Refresher, Cottesmore, and Dick Whittington. The leaders then gave way to Refresher, who was joined by Dick Whittington crossing the top, where Cottesmore was with The Tiger. The field was well bunched as they came into the straight, but Refresher drew clear to win by a length and a half from Dick Whittington, with Croupier finishing strongly in third place a length back. IMPROVEMENT MAINTAINED. Arctic King, who has been racing in. improved style, scored on the opening day and the public made the Rabbi gelding a firm favourite for the Oliau Hack Handicap. He duly beat Alby by half a length, but the rider of the latter dropped his whip at a critical stage. Harvest Moon and Vivienne, from the inside positions at the barrier, took up the running from Earl Colossus and Alby, but going along the back stretch Whotuma and Vivienne had charge. Arctic King had been improving his position and was handy at the entrance. Alby led at the distance, but Arctic King wore the topweight down to win by half a length with a gap of three lengths to Whetuma. A LIKELY SORT. Leprechaun, Acceptable, and Sporting Song wore backed in that order lor the Tainui Hack Handicap, but it was the last-named, who had won the maiden event on the opening day, who was returned the winner. Acceptable began with his customary dash to take the lead from Lord Mouton, Sporting Song, and Note Issue. Sporting Song dropped back ' five furlongs from home, allowing Acceptable to show the way to Note Issue across the top. Leprechaun put in his claim at the straight entrance and appeared to have the race won, but Sporting Song came through on the rails to win by a head from the favourite with Acceptable a length and a half hack.
