SECONDARY SCHOOLS

TENNIS TOURNEY. ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. Although the entries for the secondary schools’ tennis championships, which were decided on the Manawatu Club’s and Girls’ High School courts on Saturday attracted increased entires, teams from the Palmerston North Boys’ and Giris’ High Schools, the Technical School, the Feilding Agricultural High School, the Levin High School and the Woodville High School being engaged, this had the effect of making the elimination rounds something in the nature of an endurance contest and the physical strain told on some of the players. The late afternoon found the girls’ section not finalised, and arrangements will probably be made to -play the outstanding games at a later date. The standard of the events was exceptionally high, there being some very promising players in both sections, the boys being probably superior in so far as tactics and positional play were The A team from the Boys’ High School proved to be particularly strong and the finals of both the singles and doubles will be credited to them. Lemmon, a player of distinct promise from the Levin High School, appeared to be a likely finalist in the singles, but his form slumped and lie was soundly beaten by Fenwick in the semi-finals after he had registered several commanding victories in the preliminary rounds. Fenwick will now play-off with F. Stuckey in the final. The latter player, in partnership with his brother, won the doubles, defeating another High School pair in Moffatt and Anderson.

BOYS’ CUP. The positions in the points competition were: —Boys’ High School A team, 42 points; Levin A, 15; High School B team, 10; Levin B and Technical School, 6 points each. GIRLS’ CUP.

The Palmerston North Lawn Tennis Club conducted a Yankee tournament, a sealed handicap mixed doubles, on Saturday. The city c’ubs were well re presented and 35 entries were received. Play commenced at 2 p.m. and at its conclusion at 6.30 p.m. it was found that six pairs fiad tied for first place. The deciding games are to be played as opportunity permits. The pairs which tied for leadership honours were as follow, each having six wins and two losses-. Bowler and Miss Rennie (handicap 11). Cowley and Miss R. Robertson (8), Young and Miss Blundell (13). Williamson and Mrs Williamson (3), Plimmer and Miss Barnett (6), Scoble and Miss Carty (4).
