SURF DANGERS.
RESCUES AT PIHA. AUCKLAND, March 4. An exceptionally heavy surf at Piha resulted in several narrow escapes from drowning yesterday. A young woman, Miss Mavis Thompson, of Westmere, was swept from the rocks near the Gap during the afternoon, and it was only tho prompt action of her father, Mr E. Thompson, of To Hoe, that prevented her from being swept out to sea. They were dashed against the rocks by an incoming wave, and Mr Thompson received a cut hand and Miss Thompson severe cuts on the knees. Mr Thompson was forced to leave go his hold on his daughter, but he again went to. her assistance and managed to bring her to the rocks and to scramble up to safety. During the day three girls were rescued at different times by members of tho surf club. All three hail been carried out a cpnsiderable distance by the very strong undertow and were in di*. cutties. Two club members went to the rescuo in each case, but it was unnecessary to use a line, as the members remained in the surf in relays throughout tho day in anticipation of accidents, and were thus able to reach those in distress in rapid time. Four people were treated during the day at the clubhouse for injuries inflicted by surfboards. Mr C. Wilson, of Glen Eden, received a severe cut on a knee from a surfboard and was taken to Auckland Hospital, where stitches were inserted.
