TALKS IN BERLIN
BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY, A PRESS COMMENT. “STARK REALISM.” (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received March 5, 12.20 p.m. LONDON, March 4. It has now been arranged in consultation with the German Government that the Foreign Secretary (Sir John Simon) will travel to Berlin by air on March 7, says a British Official Wireless message. Friday and Saturday will be reserved, for conversations with the German Chancellor and other members of the German Government. Sir John Simon will return to London on March 10. The Daily Mail, in a leader, says Sir John Simon goes from London in an atmosphere of pacificism and sentimentalism. He must suddenly acclimatise himself to Berlin’s stark realism. “Herr Hitler’s Administration firstline fighters were brought up on the Bismarck doctrine that speeches do not settle great questions, but iron discipline and preparedness to face death in a worthy cause. Germany’s striking power is greater than in 1914 when, solely allied to ramshackle Austria, she came within a hair’s breadth of defeating England, France, ■Russia, Servia, and Belgium. “Mr MacDonald's statement shows that the Government at last confesses Britain’s peril. There is every indication that Herr Hitler desires the most friendly relations with Britain, hut Germany would respect Britain more if strong. The sooner Britain's weakness is removed the safer will be the peace of Europe,” the Mail adds.
