AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
COMBINED CLUBS’ GATHERING
Another successful evening sports meeting was presented bv the Kia Toa Amateur Athletic and the Manawatu Amateur Cycling Clubs last evening, when a large number of spectators followed proceedings with interest. Although the high wind made .matters somewhat difficult for the cyclists, big fields presented themselves and the times registered were excellent. Added interest to the fixture was given by the presence of the Auckland sprinter. W. Walker, who competed in the 100 yards event from scratch, gaining third place in a close finish. After surviving nine challenges for the Manning badge, E. Astin (holder) was beaten by R. Walker in a two-mile pursuit race, the challenger prevailing by 80 yards. The detailed results of the programme presented were : 1 mile cycle.—Astin (45yds.). 1; Cocker. Feilding (45). 2: Eade, Feilding (55), 3. Time. 2.16 1-5. 100 yards-—Moxon (9yds.) 1 ; Oram (10) 2; Walker, Auckland (scr.) 3. Time, 9 4-ssec. Boys’ 2-lap cvcle. —Elston 1, Drake 2, Collins 3. Time. 1.47. 440 yards flat.—Moxon f 35yds.) 1, Clarke"( 34) 2, McDonald (38) 3. Time, 48sec. 3-niile cvcle. —Thomas (410) 1; D. Lamberton' Feilding. 2; J. Lairiberton, Feilding, 3. Time, 7.22. Members of the cycling club competed at the Bulls sports meeting on Satnrelay when the following riders figured in the places:—N". Dixon. Ist in halfmile; A. Rasmussen, 2nd. in 1-mile and 3-mile (first race); H. Rogers, 2nd in 3-mile (2nd. race), 3rd 2-mile. Members of the athletic club competed at loth the Levin and Bulls meetings with success. At Levin R. Findlay won the 440 yards and the 880 yards handicaps; A. Freeman won the 220 yards handicap, and R. H. McDonald was second in the SBO yards handicap. The club team (R. Findlay R,, Moxon, B. Clarke and R. Freeman) won the 880 yards relay race. At Bulls, R. Moxon won the 100 vards maiden race and R. H- IVTcDonald and R. Findlay dead-heated for first place in the 880 vards handican. The club team (R. Findlnv. R. H. McDonald, R. Freeman and R. Moxon) was again successful in the relay race over a distance of 440 vards. Since the formation of the club eight years ago. it has never been beaten in an inter-club relav race. Tliis is a.*n outstanding performance.
