FEILDING EWE FAIR.

A WONDERFUL SALE. STRONG MARKET FOR GOOD EWES. ’ihat the annual ewe fair at Eeilding, yesterday, was a splendid sale was the consensus of opinion of many of the noted breeders and stock authorities of tho district. The yarding exceeded 33,000 and the attendance was exceptionally large. The market opened out strongly and duo to an evident scarcity of ewes selling continued briskly ihroughout the day. All lines in good condition and with good mouths did not lack for bidding and hardly a pen failed to find a buyer at auction. Values on a comparative oasis were just as good with tlio aged breeding owes as with tho t.wotootlis, the former, if anything, hanging nearer to prices ot recent years than the latter. In the two-tooth pens the top price of 4Us was shared by Messrs Jacob and Son and J. D. Hocking, both of Kiwirea, last year’s peak price in these pens being 52s for an exceptional lot. Mr Hocking has topped the fair on several other occasions also. Top price honours in tho four and sixtooth pens went to Mr N. J. Short with 275, while Mr J. R. Northcott was highest in tho 4yr ewes with 25s 2d. For a good line of 4 and syr ewes Mr C. C. Higginson obtained tlio top price of 235, while Mr -M. A. Conway’s pen of 180 good syr ewes gained the peak price of 23s 8d in their section. Vendors were generally very satisfied with the market, while the buyers were firmly of the opinion' that tho sheep offered were an exceedingly good selection. Details of some of the sales in each section are as under: — Two-tooth ewes. —On account A. R. Bartlett, 175 at 28s; account S. Setter, 222 at 28s; 300 at 31s; account D. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report.— A total yarding of 34,000 ewes came forward, buyers being present from as far north as the Waikato and from all parts of the Manawatu, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay and the Wairarapa. It was quito evident right from the outset that a strong sale would ho tho result. The sale was opened with 2-totli ewes at 11 a. lll. and at 11.30 we simultaneously sold 4 and 5-year-olds and 2-t.lis. In both sections of the yarding a full bench of buyers was keenly interested right, throughout the sale, with the result tliat we report practically a total clearance at prices which in tlio face of the present climatic conditions must be considered very satisfactory indeed from the vendors’ point oi view. As far as the 2-tootlis were concerned, the demand for tho first hah hour of the sale was rather sticky, but as the sale progressed values hardened to the extent of from 2s to 2s 6d per head for better class sheep. On the other hand, as far as 4 and 5-yr. ewes were concerned, values remained steady right throughout the day. Included in our offering were quite a few pens of lop line 2-th ewes which sold at irom 28s to 33s 6d, the latter price being obtained for a pen of particularly nice Hock ewes sold on behalf of Mr W. C. Small, of Wnituna In the 4-year-old section there were very few pens of what one would call really first-class owes, with the result that any of outstanding quality met with a particularly keen sale. In this section the top price was obtained for a pen of very line 4- owes sold by us on behalf of Mr .1. Northcott at, 25s 2d. The 5-year-old ewe offering was probably the heaviest yarding of the day, there being a lew pens of very high class owes forwarded, but in the main the majority of the offering consisted 01 road-stumed ewes, some of them showing rather doubtful mouths. For the hotter class five-year-old ewes there was probably the keenest competition of the sale and in this section we wore successful in obtaining the top price of the day on behalf of Mr M. A. Conway, of Cheltenham, his 5- fetching 26s Bd. As quoted in reporting on the Feihling sale some two weeks ago the offering of really good 5year chisel-mouth ewes is nowhere commensurate in tile way of meeting the demand. Had the Manawatu and West Coast district been favoured witli rains such as the East Coast has had during Hie last week wo venture to say that yesterday’s market would have shown an increase 011 the prices realised. In reviewing yesterday’s yarding as a whole, the quality of ewes which came forward was not up to tho usual Fciiding- ewe fair standard. Our complement of the yarding at yesterday’s sale consisted of 15,339 sheep and we report a total clearance with tlio exception of a few pens.
