BAND CONCERTS.

The City Band provided an enjoyable programme of music at the Esplanade on Sunday afternoon, there being a good attendance of the public to listen to the music in such a delightful setting. The following was the programme, rendered under the able baton of Mr W. O’Hara : —March, “Queen of the North” ; hymn, “Kyrie Eilson”; selection, “Wagner”; waltz, “Garden Party”; cornet polka with Bandsman J. J. Cosgrove as solosit, “Cornet King”; hymn, “Deep Harmony”; overture, “La Fate”; march, “Challenge.” The Palmerston North Garrison Band rendered a programme of music from the Square rotunda in the evening and this also was much appreciated? The band, under Lieutenant Pike as conductor, revealed splendid tonal qualities and much is hoped for in its contest performances next month. Proceedings were entered upon with the playing of the march “Mephistoples” (Shipley Douglas), which is the piece the band has selected for the quickstep at the forthcoming contest, while later in the proceedings the test pieces were also rendered. The hymn “Okl Earth” (Ayrton) succeeded the opening number, and then followed the first contest selection. “Haydn” (Rimmer) which was enthusiastically received, although the audience were even more demonstrative over the playing of the second test piece, “Comedy” (Ireland) which, with the spirited work of the concerted instrumentalists to give the piece the air of comedy, brightness and laughter, required very delicate handling to carry out the theme of the composition. A cornet solo “Lost Chord” (Sullivan), for which Bandsman B. Register was the soloist, preceded the playing of “P.N.G.8.,” a march which was composed and dedicated to the Garrison Band on its winning championship honours last year by Bandsman J. B. Thomson, a member of the band.
