COWLING

RINKS MATCHES CONTINUED. SIX ROUNDS COMPLETED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 14. The New Zealand bowling championship tournament was continued to-day. Two further games in the section rounds of the full rinks championship were completed, totalling six out of eight in this division of the championship. Two more rounds will be played to-morrow. Great interest centres on the fact that the result at' the end of play to-morrow will determine the teams which will qualify for the postsection rounds commencing on Wednesday. The number of wins necessary the qualification is six, or the highest number of wins in any particular section. Players who are released from the rinks and still survive in the singles and pairs championships will commence play in further elminating rounds on the Carlton Club’s greens on Wednesday. The weather was ideal for bowling to-day; a light breeze blew, but did not affect to any extent the course of wellgreened bowls. The greens played fast, and surfaces which are causing much concern on the part of greenkeepers on account of the continued dry spell played muoh the same as on the previous days df the tournament. Only four teams have gained the maximum number of six wins. These are R. V. Thomas (Wairere, Napier), S. Jenkins (Carlton), H. A. Robertson (Oneliunga) and R. Buchan (Te Arolia). Twenty-three teams have five wins, and there are many with four. Any of the latter still has an opportunity of qualifying. The champion rink, G. Dickson, F. Redpath, H. F. Gibson, H. Wilson, of the Linwooil Club, Christchurch, which sustained a loss on the previous day, won both matches to-day. The team requires only one win to-morrow to quality for post-section play. Contestants who were fortunate enough to be drawn for play on the green of the Devonport Club acclaimed the surface as one of the best in the tourney. Players took the fullest advantage of the opportunity, and staged brilliant drawing. Despite a mishap to the Auckland skip, Steele, when he slipped upon the front of the mat when driving, which resulted in taking two protecting shots out for six down, the game against Brenmer, of West End, was one of the best drawing games of the day. One head of full i'ength, had eight bowls within an inch or so of each other clustered round the. jack. Francis, of Balmoral, had a hard contest with Dr Paterson, of Mt. Albert, who registered his first win in the fifth round. Francis led on the board on the fourteenth head by 17 to 10. The scores were evened up on the eighteenth and Balmoral “wanted one to win on the concluding head. On this Francis lay three on tne change over, and Dr Paterson eventually drove and burned the white. Not obtaining a shot up from liis team, and having awkward ports to come through, he burned and replayed the head again. On the second replay the doctor was down and could not rake the game out of the fire. Francis leads in his section -with five victories.

Thomas, of Wairere, Napier, continued his winning way and remained undefeated. He had a hard contest with the Auckland rink in his opening game, and after an undecided commencement the team played excellent bowls, particularly the No. 3, Bryan, and eventually won by two points, in the second game the Napier ring scored an easy win over Evans (Whitiora). Petty, of West End, New Plymouth, was another to score two wins. The team has a chance of qualifying, now having four wins. Campbell, of Mount Eden, was another rink with two wins on the day, both by narrow margins of points. Draper, of Imperial, Christchurch, registered/ his first win when he beat Sutherland, of Avondale, in the opening game. Even the wearer of a New Zealand champion badge can place a bowl down the greens on the wrong bias, as was shown in the game on the Devonport green. The champion in question was 0. Hard ley, of the West End Club, Auckland. J. A. NASH’S WIN. In the game. J. A. Nash, of Palmerston North, versus Gee, of Te Awamutu. Gee fought hard to win on the last head. The decision he wanted was five points, and by too exact play of liis No. 3, North, and himself, his chance of victory was nullified. He lay three shots when' North trailed the jack six inches. Three was the count. Then Gee, in endeavouring to draw a further counter, trailed the jack six inches still further from the original counters in front and then lay two shots. It was a fine example of bowls played so excellently that he registered a loss in the game. Teams under Fookes, of Carlton, and Evans, of Whitiora. staged a game so protracted that the play occupied four hours and 25 minutes.

Another final head of interest was staged between Adem, of St. Kilda, and Eiigebretson, of Napier. The St. Kilda team wanted three to tie and four to ■win. Lying down on the final head, Adess drove the white to within six inches of the ditch and lay five shots. Beer, who was actually skipper of the Napier team, overran the length with two bowls, which were ditched. The shot played by Adess was most difficult, as several awkward bowls had to be negotiated. The St. Kilda skip deserves great credit for his cleverness in thus raking the game out of the fire from an awkward position. Little, skip of the Hamilton team, displayed fine sporting spirit in his game against the Kaikohe team. little had driven the jack against the bank, and white had come to rest upon the green. Thinking the jack was dead. Marker, of the northern team, picked it up after being told that it was still alive. The shot was drawn by Little, who would not take the count.
