A NEW
TRANSPORT MINISTRY’S PROJECT. TO SOLVE TRAFFIC PROBLEM. Colonel C. H. Bressey, chief engineer of the Roads Department of the Ministry of Transport, and Sir Edwin Lutyens, the famous architect, have been given three years in which to devise a scheme for the “modernising” of London. The project, which has been outlined to the House of Commons by the Minister of Transport (Mr HoreBerlisha), embraces the most ambitious town-planning operation visualised since the Great l ire, the objective being to re-design London and its outskirts to meet the requirements of modern traffic. An area of 900 square miles within a circle of 25 miles front Charing Cross will be affected. Every form of traffic —motor vehicle (private and public), railways, shipping, “tubes,” cycles, and even pedsstriaji—is to come within the scope of the plans. As London has practically reached saturation point in surface traffic. Colonel Bressey and Sir Edwin Lutyens will approach their tremendous task with certain urgent requirements in mind. It will be open to them, if they thi.uk fit, to recommend the building of underground or overhead highways, new railway termini and docks, overhead aerodromes, bomb shelters, and bridges over existing streets to minimise the dangers of the present cross-
ings. It is stated that sectional plans a.nd reports may be presented to the Ministry of Transport from time to time, and' that these, if approved, will be acted upon, providing financial arrangements can be made. To assist the designers in their task, the Commissioner of Police for the metropolitan area will place at their disposal data already in his possession regarding the movement of traffic.
The report and plan, when completed, will be referred by the Minister to the Lopdon and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee.
