RACING AT FEILDING
CHILE WINS JUMPING EVENT. LIMULUS OPENS HER ACCOUNT. STITCH SCORES IN THE HANDICAP. The second day of the Fcilcling Jockey Club's spring mooting was held'to-day in glorious sunshine with the track hal’d and fast. There was a largo attendance of patrons, while there was an indication that, with the exception of two races, big fields would be the order for the day. As on the opening day, backers wen? astray in their selection of the favourite in the jumping event, Chile, the tmrd faourito, defeating Manawatu, who was first fancy in the betting. The latter might well have tested the winner to a greater extent but for Chile coming over on him after landing at the final fence. Chile had been running out at his fences and Manawatu, who had come up fast, attempted to work up on the rails. However, the rider of Chile straightened his mount with the whip, forcing Manawatu to move out again. . , .... An enquiry was held into, the incident, but the placings were allowed to stand. P. Burgess, the rider of Chile, was, however, stood down for 14 days for careless riding. Patrons selected a newcomer to tne ranks of the maiden performers at the meeting, Limulus, as the favourite lor the Novice Stakes. The daughter of Chief Ruler and Chelae was backed very confidently and she carried her host of backers through successfully. WINNER SURVIVES ENQUIRY. Manawatu’s consistency induced patrons to install him favourite for the Cheltenham Hack Hurdles, but an improvement in/ the form of Chile saw the latter account for the favourite. However, the winner had to survive an enquiry, having come over on Manawatu in the straight. Golden Empire dashed off at a fast pace and he took the first jump in good style to show the way to Spearform and Sunny Song into the straight. However, the leading division fenced badly at the second fence fronting the official stand, and Glide took charge from Jaj'son and Richfield, with Manawatu and Cotsfiold together next, Golden Empire dropping back to the rear. The order among the leading division was unaltered at the straight entrance, although Manawatu was moving up. Chile was first over the final fence, but he came over on Manawatu and the latter had to come on the outside of him While he finished on well, Manawatu could not reach Chile, who scored by a length and a half from the favourite, v/ith Jayson two lengths back. Richfield was fourth with Sunny Song and Spearform next, the last named having finished on well after being well back half a mile from home. STITCH HOLDS ON. In a five-horse race Rust was installed a firm favourite for the St. Andrews Handicap. However, after holding the inside position ail the way he failed to run on in the straight. On the other hand Stitch, who had acted as pacemaker, held his position to win from Plateau who showed an improvement. The field was sent off promptly, Stitch coming across to fill the role of pacemaker for Rust and Sunny Sky, with Plateau and True Shaft in the rear. They raced in that order to the back and along the back stretch, with Plateau commencing to improve his position approaching the straight entrance. Rust was the first to weaken, but Plateau, although finishing strongly, could not make any impression on the leader who won by two lengths from the late challenger, with Sunny Sky threequarters of a length back. True Shaft, after being last to the turn for home, was next, a ncad away.
FIRM FAVOURITE SCORES. Limulus, although she has done very little racing, was confidently backed in the Novice Stakes, and the daughter of Chief Ruler and Chelae prevailed, although she was weakening at the close after displaying a fund of early speed. State Bank and Hard Times both failed to reproduce their first day’s form, Cynola, who had given trouble at the start of the Trial Plate yesterday, bolted through the tapes to unseat her rider, and she was withdrawn from the race. Limulus and Onewhetu raced to the front to take up the running from Alby, Martianess, Sporting Song, Kentucky Song and Eara. There was little change in the order crossing the top, but with heads straightened out for home Limulus came away from the rails to finish in the centre of the course. Although weakening, she held on to beat Albv, who had shown a fund of pace in the Trial Plate yesterday, half a length back and a head in front of Onewhetu, who kept to the rails. Half a length hack came Eara with an interval to the bunch. ROYAL ROUTINE SUPERIOR. Although Royal Routine had declined his engagement yesterday, the public preferred Porotiti and Cullus to him for the Colyton Handicap, but the newcomer proved definitely superior, while the diminutive Bodylinc ran an excellent second. The field left the harrier in line, Royal Routine. Diatomcus and Bodyline forging to the front from Navaho and Cullus, with Burnish bringing up the rear. Gradual.y Royal Routine took charge to lead Diatqmous and Bodyline across the top, Navaho and Burnish being the next in the running. Diatomous momentarily threatened danger to Royal Routine, but the latter drew aiyay agaiq, in the last stages to win. by one and a-lfalf lengths from Bodyline, who finished determinedly to beat Diatomous for second money by half a'length. Cullus was fourth, with the others ’in line. THE DETAILED RUNNERS. CHELTENHAM HACK HURDLES, of £80; second horse £ls and third £5. About one mile and a half and 130 yards. 3 Mr J.
