HAWKE CUP TRIALS.

MANAWATU COMPILE 187 RUNS. MASTERTON, Nov. 30. Bright, sunshine prevailed to-day for the opening day’s play in an elimination match for the Hawke Cup between the Manawatu and Wairarapa cricket representatives, played on the Park Oval. The game will conclude to-morrow, ilie wicket was in splendid order, and the outfield firm and fast. Making first use of the wicket Manawatu batted very slowly, and with the Wairarapa bowlers sending down goodlength deliveries the batsmen were soon in difficulties. When the luncheon adjournment was taken the visitors . had lost seven wickets for 96 runs. On the resumption Penman and Norris put a stop to the rot by steady, resourceful batting. They carried the tally from 69 to 167 before Penman had his wickets skittled by a fast winger from Fortune, s innings of 34 was a solid one, which was very useful at a critical stage. Norris at this stage had scored 64 runs. The remaining two wickets resulted in the addition of only a further 22 runs. Norris, after a pretty innings, was trapped legbefore by Sherratt. The innings closed at 3.20 p.m. with the total at 187 runs. Wairarapa commenced steadily, runs coming slowly at the start. The hatting brightened considerably toward the close of play, Massey hitting out with freedom. At stumps the team had lost six wickets for 171’ runs, Massey being 65 not out.
