HIGHWAYS BOARD

VISIT TO FOXTON. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Nov. 24. Yesterday members of the Main Highway* Board visited Foxton and made an inspection of tho main highways in which the borough is concerned. Those making the inspection were Messrs C. J. McKenzie (chairman), Talbot, Wood, Grcensmith, Wynyard, Sharp, Morrison, Albertson (engineer), and Knapp (secretary). Mr Acheson (assistant engineer) was also in attendance. The board was welcomed at tho council chambers by the Mayor (Mr M. E. Perroau), Cr Jno. Ross and the clerk (Mr Wm. Trueman). Chief amongst the council’s requests was an appeal for some improvement to the Whirokino highway. The second request was for the tar-scaling of tho Foxton-Beach highway, and a request was also made that tho board make arrangements for its road planer to visit Foxton and plane down the “waves” in Main Street.

Mr Sharp said that one difficulty the board was faced with in regard to Foxton requests was that the borough was not in a very financial position and could not avail itself very readily of any subsidies offered by tho board for highways work. Mr Pcrreau said that was so, but if the board undertook any work in or near Foxton there would be good labour available in Foxton.

Mr McKenzie said that tho board would look into the matter of having Main Street declared the main highway instead of Johnston Street. The board had stopped at Whirokino and looked over the locality. It was aware of the two proposed routes for the road but it had not received all the information yot concerning tho deviation from the Manawatu County Council. He would see if the preparation of the information could be expedited. If not, the board would havo to make arrangements to have the survey work carried out itself. The Whirokino presented a big problem. The board would have to look carefully into the matter of future flood protection schemes, bridges, etc. It would give consideration to the matter of raising the road when all data was available. Tho Beach Road would be discussed with the Manawatu City Council. Mr McKenzie said that nothing could be done to plane off a scaled road.
