GLEN OROUA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) GLEN OKOUA, Nov. 31. The monthly mooting of the School Committee was held on Monday evening, when there were present Messrs W. M. b’ostor (chairman), J. Hcrdman (secretary), A. T. Bailey, 11. W. Carter, !•'. Webb, and S. G. Barlane (head teacher). Correspondence was received from the Education Board stating that a grant of £4O would bo made for the provision of a drill and basketball area. The architect had estimated the cost at £l2O, and the committee would be required to find the balanco in labour and material. The committee decided to commence the work of levelling and laying tho foundation in a few days. Various other improvements would alsta be carried out under the. unemployment scheme, including the piping and filling in of tho open drain between the school hedge and the road. Quotations wero received from various firms regarding tho cost of cement. The procuring of tho drain pipes, and a new diving board for the swimming bath was -left to Mr Webb. Tho outlet pipe of the swimming bath, which had recently boon blocked was now cleared, it was stated, while the bath had been cleaned, ready tor the commencement of the swimming season. Messrs Foster and Carter decided to make some small repairs to the bath before swimming commenced. Regarding charges for admission to tho bath, it was agreed that these, remain tho same as last year, and committee members decided that they would take turns in supervising during the school holidays. The head teacher was authorised to send out the usual subscription books for the. picnic and prize fund, and to obtain prizes as usual. The annual breaking up concert and prize-giving ceremony would bo held at the hall in tho evening, as last year. The committee decided to make a donation of ten shillings to tho The Kawan Primary Schools’ Rugby Association. The head teacher reported that part of the standard 6 proficiency examination had been held at the school while for tho remaining subjects the candidates would be examined by tho inspector on December 13 at Rongotea. The examination of the classes below standard 6 would be conducted by the head teacher and completed early next month. Accounts totalling £4 15s 5d were passed for payment. ' In a recent senior cricket match between the Taikorca and Glen Oroua ■Schools the local boys were beaten at Taikorca by 16 runs Batting first, Gen Oroua scored 37 (P. Sullivan 19), to which Taikorca replied with 53 (I. Lucinsky 17) Tho most successful bowlers tor Taikorca were I. Lucinsky who took six wickets for 10 runs, and W. Hunt, three for 4. For Glen Oroua, R. Lawlor took five for 7 and P. Sullivan two for 8 A junior match between the same schools was played at Glen Oroua this afternoon and resulted in a win for taikorca by.” 2 runs to 29, two of the visitors retiring with 20 and 21 runs. For tho local boys the only successful batsman was J. Matai, who scored 11, not out. _ , ' Congratulations to Master Harry Scott, an ex-pupil of the school on his success at tho recent sports of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School . The picnic of the Sunday school is to be hold at the Palmerston North Esplanade on December 1. . , Miss Rolf is at present on a visit to Auckland.
