AMATEUR CYCLING
MANAWATU CLUB MEETS. The annual meeting of the Manawatu Amateur Cycling Club was held last evening, Mr N. C. Dixon presiding over a good attendance. The report (as already published iu the “Standard”) was adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year : —-Patron, Mr E. Houlihan; president, Mr W. J. Willett; vice-presidents, 30 were elected.; secretary-treasurer, Mr C. Stagpoole; handicappers, Messrs J. Hastie and I. Ross; timekeepers, Messrs Weston J. Smith, J. Rush and V. Spackman; starters, Messrs A.' Divekall and F. Aisher; delegates to centre, Messrs N. C. Dixon and A. Divehall; committee, Messrs- J. Hastie, J. Rush, A. Divehall, W. Feasey, V. Spackman, M. Quigan, M. Goudie,' F. Manning, E. Willett, H. Rogers and G. Little; club captain, Mr N. Dixon; records steward, Mr J. Rush; property stewards, Messrs J. Rush and E. Willett; hon. auditor, Mr K.- S. Glendinning; classification committee, the handicappers were appointed. Mr Stagpoole reported that a subcommittee had met the Kia Toa Athletic Club, who were willing to cooperate with the cyclists. It had been decided to recommend December 2 as the date for the opening of the track season, a recommendation being made that three representatives of the club confer with three members of the Kia Toa Club for the appointment of officials.
Mr Ross stressed the need for punctuality on the part of the riders, pointing out that races timed for 6.30 and advertised as such had not commenced on many occasions until about 7 o’clock.
Mr Willett suggested that the races be conducted strictly to time, leaving out late starters.
The town clerk advised that permission had been granted to conduct evening meetings at the Sportsground if arrangements could be made with the Cricket Associaton. Mr Stagpoole said that he would interview the secretary of the Cricket Association on the matter.
Mr Dixon announced that the trophies for the past season had been won as follow:—Wednesday riders, E. Shearin; Saturday riders, G. Esau; Mr F. Manning’s cup for fastest times, G. Little.
Mr Manning was accorded a vote of thanks for his donation.
It was decided that for the opening meeting a one-lap and a two-mile race be conducted.
A suggestion was made to the committee that a series of challenge races be conducted for a tropliy, a set of rules to be drawn up. Mr Manning donated a badge for the event. It was also decided that rules be formulated for the usual track races.
The fees (Is for both races or 9d for one) were adopted, as for last season. It was decided that the matter of inter-club visits be considered by the committee.
Mr Stagpoole intimated his willingness to donate a trophy for lap racing and was accorded a vote of thanks. The B grade cup was allocated as second prize in the track points contest.
Mr Willett urged the acquisition of a closed ground for evening meetings, suggesting that the A. and P. Association be approached for the use of the track at the Showgrounds. Mr Dixon stated that this would be a matter for all the amateur athletic bodies. He said it would be discussed with the Kia Toa Club.
The secretary was instructed to write to the Wellington Cycling Centre ascertaining the position 'in regard to certificates for the last race to Wellington.
