SUNDAY CONCERTS.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Permit me also to commend Councillors Cameron, Aitclnson, tree and Tennent for the definite stand they took in regard to the showing of pictures on the Lord’s Day. -ine end never does justify the means and, charity or no charity, pictures ought not to be shown in a Christian community on the Lord’s Day. It is morally and ethically wrong. I remember sir, that some years ago the Auckland City Council gave permission to one organisation—a religious one, I am sorry to say, to hold pictures on a Sunday. Immediately the council was inundated with requests for permission to show pictures. A political party applied, the Rationalistic Association applied, and several we - fare societies applied, _ with the result that at one stage m Auckland m the city there were no less than hve or six theatres open on the sun ay night; crowds flocked into the city; it was just like Saturday uiglit W lien the council saw wliat they themselves in for they realised they had made a mistake and I am glad to say they had the courage to cancel the permits they had issued and all theatres: were closed and now- no picture is permitted to be. screened m the Auckland city on a Sunday. It is not too late for Mr Mansford and the rest of our councillors to rectify the mistake they have made and learn from the experience of the Auckland city. That they are in a difficult position and must act in the interests of all parties we know, and we sympathise with them; we do not condemn. At'the same time the .question in issue is a moral and spiritual one, and there can be only one way to act and that is do what is right. Meanwliile, sir, the Christian forces of this town, I am sure, will stand behind Councillors Aitcliison, Free, Tennent and Cameron to a man and heartily support them in the bold stand they have taken for the moral and spiritual uplift of this fair city.—l am, etC '’ PRO ARIS ET FOCIS.
