At the November meeting of the Shannon Women’s Institute, Alls Bryant, of Manakau, gave an interesting demonstration of soft toy making, and showed a varied collection of toys she had made. The report of the recent half-yearly federation meeting was capably given by Airs K. Mitchell. IVlesdames H. Easton, S. Richardson, L. Burling, and Miss J. Astwoo'd were welcomed as new members and afternoon tea was served by the junior members, Aiisses Barber, Snelling, Burling, Blaikie and Davis. An appeal was received from the Palmerston North Free Ambulance for financial assistance and it was decided to donate 10s 6d. A suggestion that the institute assist the town queen in the school carnival was discussed, the prevailing opinion being that as the institute represented all the bodies concerned in its membership it would be necessary to. assist all the candidates or none. It was finally decided that, as each member would be called on in many ways to support the carnival, the institute would leave the matter in their hands. Tile lampshade competition was won by Airs W. S. Jamieson and the competition for the month, for a child’s dress costing no more than 3s 6d. resulted : Seniors, Mrs Blaikie 1, Mrs Dickoff 2. Airs Tremewan 3; juniors, Miss Al. Barber 1, Aliss J. Blaikie 2. It was decided to hold a street stall in December if the necessary arrangements can be niadc, with a view to augmenting the institute, funds, which have been deeply drained this year. A gathering in aid of the Christmas tree funds is to be held next week. As there will, be nearly 80 children to cater for, the whole-hearted support of members was solicited. Next month there will be a demonstration on floral work, a roll call, “What I would do if I won £4000,” and a competition for the best Christmas gift costing no more than Is. Four rinks from the Foxton Bowling Club played friendly games at Shannon on Wednesday afternoon, the local club winning on the aggregate by 73 points to 69. The following are the scores, Shannon players being mentioned first: Wilson, Henry. Cronquest, Alexander (skip) 21 y. Francis, A. Walls, F. Woods, Alattar (skip) 25; Terry, Hyde, Newton, Grey (skip) 16 v. Putty, Eruera, Howe, Hippner (skip) 12; Collins, Stern, Bovis, Blaikie (skip) 19 v. J. Ross, G. Walls, J. Christie, Hinds (skip) 16; Whitehead, Butt, Roach, Clayton (skip) 17 v. Davis, Scaddon, Newth, Huntley (skip) 16. Prior to the commencement of the games, Mr J. A. Roach, the president, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, . commenting that it was many a day since the local green had seen so many players and stating that the visitors would be pleased to know that the depression had taken its departure from the local bowling green. At the close of play Mr Huntley thanked the club for their hospitality with special thanks to the ladies of the Croquet Club for afternoon tea.
Cronquest, Hemmingsen, Alexander and Grey (skip) will play Palmerston North next Saturday for the Manson and Barr Cup. -
The Institution of Electrical Engineers’ examination is being held this week in Shannon.
The Borough Council has received advice from the Loans Board that the application for a £I6OO loan has been approved.
