CAPTIVE MISSIONARIES.
RESCUE EFFORTS FAIL. SHANGHAI,’Nov. 21. All efforts to rescue the New Zealand missionary Mr A. Hayman, and the Swiss, M. Bosshardt, have proved abortive despite further representations by the British authorities to Nanking. The Government is declared to have ordered provincial officials to expedite the work, but the Communist captors liavo not been traced and were last reported as heading toward Szechwan. Nine women, also captured in October, have been released for the purpose of conveying a demand for a ransom of 100,000 dollars for the restoration of the two men.
Dispatches received at the British Legation from Chunking on October 9 reported the capture by Communists of three foreign missionaries belonging to the China Inland Mission stationed at Kinchow, also known as Lao-hua-ping. They were Mr Hayman, a native of Auckland, M. Bosshardt, a Swiss, and Miss Gemblen, an America.
