ORATRESS PASSES.

GREAT FAMILY RECORD.

The death occurred recently . at the Rongotea stud property of the Hunterville sportsman, Mr T. A. Duncan, of tiie well-known brood mare Oratress, Ihe dam of the Wellington and Auckland Cup winner, Concentrate, and of Oratrix, a New Zealand Cup winner. It was a coincidence that both Oratress and Oratrix won the big two miles contest at Riccarton when five years of age._ Oratress was got by Kilbroney from Equftas, who was by Advance—Muriwai, by Torpedo, and during her racing career she started in 32 races for 19 wins Prior to being put into training by Mr S. J. Gibbons, of Marton, she assisted to pull a coach between the township and the railway station, while she was thrice offered for sale and refused. On the completion of her racing career, she was put to the stud, her first foal being Windbag (by Absurd). Then came Oratrix (Kilbroney), Concentrate (Kilbroney), Oral (Chief Ruler), Oratorian (Hunting Song), Oratorius (Diacquenod) and, since passing into the ownership of Mr Duncan, a filly by Gainscourt and one by Laughing Prince. She missed in the seasons 1924, 1927, 1930, and 1933. Her most prominent progeny wore undoubtedly got by Kilbroney, both Oratrix and Concentrate proving themselves to be wonderful stayers, the latter's list of successes including the Auckland and Wellington Cups, the Great Northern St. Leger Stakes, and the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton. Oratress, who had been mated 'with Laughing Prince last season to proluce a filly, was running on the property at Rongotoa, and it was while jumping across a ditch that her hind legs gave way from under her. Internal trouble developed and it was found impossible to save her. Thus passed a matron whose stock have played a prominent part on the Turf in the Dominion, and hopes are now entertained that her name will still bo kept fresh by the activities of her progeny yet to race.
