MANAWATU CYCLING CLUB.

REPORT FOR 1933-34. The annual report of the Manawatu Amateur Cycling Club, In reviewing the activities of the past season, congratulates the members on the interest shown and the general successes gained by them during the past season. Continuing, the report states : “Owing to the N.Z.A.A.A. giving up th© control of cycling, a new body was formed with headquarters in Wellington, which now controls amateur cycling in New Zealand. It was necessary for the club to affiliate, and the change lias been to our advantage. The membership remains about the same as last season, but the prospects for the coming year are much brighter, and we should see a big increase in active members. Twelve evening meetings were held at the Sportsground in conjunction with the Kia Toa Amateur Athletic Club, to whom we extend our thanks for helping to make these meetings the success they were, both from a competitive and a public viewpoint. The entries for all events were good and competition keen. E. Lawrence tvou the cup presented for most points during the season. Again the club were unable to hold an afternoon meeting, amateur athletes in our city being unfortunate in not having a suitable ground. The Sportsground has a good track laid down, but owing to the ground being so open to the public it is impossible to get the gate proceeds to repay us for the financial outlay which is required to conduct these meetings. The Wednesday races again proved very popular, in all 21 being held, with an average entry of 10. G. Esau was the most successful rider and receives the Cooper Cup for most placings. The cup presented by Mr F. Manning for fastest time points was won by G. Little. Saturday races: Only five races were held, which was very disappointing in view of the number of Saturday riders. The cup for most points was. won by E. Sheerin; E. Lawrence gaining the cup for fastest time. Members competed with success in all the big road races held, G. Esau being the most successful, winning both the New Zealand and North Island junior road championships; E. Lawrence was second in the Manawatu time trial; N. Hyde was third in the North Island championship and gained ninth place and fifth fastest time in the New Zealand championship. Congratulations are due to these riders for their sterling performances. Both Esau and Lawrence . were chosen to represent the centre at the New Zaland championship held at Christchurch. “During the season three valued members were lost to the club : Mr G. Coolrsley, a supporter of many years, left to reside in another town. Before his departure he was met by the members and presented with a gift as a token of the esteem in which he was held by all. Mr L. Ward carried on the duties of secretary in the early part of the season and to him the thanks of the club are also due for the interest he displayed at all times. He has left this city for Auckland. Mr R. Lawrence, one of our active members, has also taken his departure and is, we hope, competing in his new district with the success that attended his efforts while with us. To all who donated trophies we extend our thanks; also to the Press for the manner in which they have at all times helped to place before the public our effort to promote amateurism in our city.”
