OBITUARY.

CARDINAL GASPARRI. ~ROME, Nov. 18. ' The death has occurred of Cardinal Pietro Gasparri. Cardinal Pietro Gasparri was Papal Secretary of State from 190 S to 1930, when he resigned at the age of almost 78 vears. He was born at Ussito on May 5, 1852, and took degrees in philosophy, theology and Canon Law in Rome. When quite a young man he became Professor of Canon Law at the Catholic Institute in Paris. In 1894 he was appointed Domestic Prelate, and four years later Archbishop of Caesarea (Palestine) and Apostolic Delegate to Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. On his return to Rome he became Secretary of the Congregation of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs. He brought about the reconciliation of France and the Holy See and to him Pope Pius X entrusted . the codification of Canon Law which took 13 years. He became a cardinal in 1907, and for many years he directed the foreign affairs of the Vatican. One of his final tasks was to conduct the negotiations which led to the Lateran Treaties between the Pope and the King of Italy, and set up a Vatican State. FILM DIRECTOR’S DEATH. Received November 20, 8.45 a.m. NEW YORK, Nov. 19. A message from Beverley Hills (California) states that Mr Willard Mack, aged 56, the playwright, actor, and motion picture director, died on Sunday night from a heart attack.
