EXTRACTS FROM “ STANDARD ” NOVEMBER 6, 1904.
A section of 50 acres, . with buildings, had been sold on Rangitikei Line, two miles from Palmerston North, at £SO 10s per acre. Another section, situated- at Waituna, 316 acres in extent, had been sold at £l2 2s 6d per acre. Tho financial result of the Manawatu Show was considered to he splendid, tho total takings at the third day amounting to £IOOO. Exceeding all records in this regard the return was held to be a -vindication of the policy of extending the membership privileges. London cables said that the fall of Port Arthur was imminent The Japanese had sustained a strong attack and the Russian long range guns were out of action, while their ammunition was practically spent.
There was a proposal in Ottawa that a tax of a dollar a head should be placed on bachelors.
