EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD ” NOVEMBER 3, 1904.
Heavy wind and rain from the west had marred the 19th annual Show of the Manawatu A. and P. Association.. The situation between Russia and Britain was still serious, as a result of the firing on Hull trawlers at the Dogger Bank, said a London message. Russia was stated to be temporising, while Britain was in dead earnest, and the prospect of a conflict between the two nations was said to be not improbable. News from Foxton stated that the Manawatu Rowing. Club, with headquarters there, had decided to join the Now Zealand Rowing Association. Two doubleseated outriggers were to be placed in good order. The Melbourne Cup bad been won by Acrasia, some prominence being given to the fact that the owner of the horse had a £20,000 book on the event.
