The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council wan held on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Butt), Councillors A. E. Hyde, W. Clayton, T. C. Thwaites, J. Curran, junr., A. G. Mason, J. A. Roach, and J. Curran, senr. The Mayor of Temuka wrote that as sufficient support was not forthcoming in connection with the proposed conference in Wellington to consider unemployments matters, ho had decided to take no further action. Notification was received that the Main Highways Board representatives would meet the council next month in order to hear any matters which the borough may wish to submit for consideration. The council resolved to renew the application for Grey Street to Managhao electric power house being declared a main highway. It was rosolvcd to write to the stationmaster at Shannon, and ask for his co-operation in a beautifying scheme lor improving the appearance' of tho railway station grounds. The borough ranger reported that 13 head of stock had been impounded and 36 head removed off the streets during the month. Tho foreman in his report asked for authority to purchaso necessary matorial to repair tho cycling track. —Granted. Tho concroting of the cemetery footpaths had been completed, and 18 yards of metal carted to various strocts. Work was in progress on tho Nathan Terraco drainage scheme, and next week the cleaning of Stanzcll Drain would bo put in hand. Instructions wore given to form footpath in Stafford Street and fill in the intersections of streets. Members of tho Shannon branch of the Plunkct Society bade farewell to Nurse Norris, who is on transfer to Auckland. Tho Parish Hall was tastefully decorated with Iceland poppies, and after the afternoon tea Mr C. M. Cronqucst., on behalf of the members and friends, presented the guest with a travelling rug eulogising tho excellent and instructive manner in which Nurse Norris had carried out her duties during her eight years as nurse. Nurse Norris was the first resident nurso in this district for the society, and, although expressing regret at her leaving, Mr Cronquest wished her a happy and prosperous future in her new home. Mrs C. Easton (president), and Mrs H. Hudson (cxpresident) also spoke of tho excellent work of the nurse. Nurso Norris suitably replied. Items were rendered by Mrs Cronquest and Mrs S. Barber, tho competition winners being Mrs J. Campbell (Mangaoro) and Mrs Murray. _ t At tho closing meeting of tho Girls’ Club session the points prize, presented by Mrs J. Williams (Levin), w T as awarded to Betty Blackwood and the attendance prize, donated by Mrs C. M. Cronquest, went to Kay Bass with 100 per cent attendance marks. Both girls received hearty congratulations and applause. A happy evening was spent in games and competitions, small prizes being won by Marie Joyce, Kay Bass and Betty Blackwood. The “Mad Hatters” ball was reported to be a financial success and it was resolved to hold the annual meeting on the first Thursday in March. Mr E. N. Maccanley has returned home from hospital much improved in health. Mr and Mrs F. Powell, Auckland, are staying with Mrs Powell’s parents, Mr and Mrs T. Hensman.
