SHEEP SHEARING. ATTRACTIVE EXHIBITION. What proved to be perhaps the most attractive innovation the A. and P. Association introduced at the Spring Show was the sheep shearing competition which was held yesterday, for not only were fast exponents of the work attracted by the contest, but public interest ran into dimensions seldom, if ever, seen before at a subsidiary attraction of tlie Show. At the morning session when the heats were held the cattle pavilion was crowded with spectators, but in the afternoon, when the finals were contested, even standing room was at a premium and onlookei’s perched themselves at all angles and positions on the walls of the building in an endeavour to see the experts at work. The novelty was perhaps strongest in appeal to city residents, many of whom had never seen the sheep divested of its fleece, and included in the crowd, which must have totalled well on to 1000 people, was a large proportion of ladies who showed great interest in the competition. Six contestants qualified for the finals and provided a splendid exhibition oi ! shearing. Points were given

for time, neatness and cleanliness, each competitor being allowed a trial sheep to get his machine in order, and then had to shear three competition sheep. In practically every instance perfect mastery of the job was shown although two, Rewiti and McManaway, in particular showed better skill in negotiating the body and opening up the fleece. All of the contestants employed a beautiful sweep along the back and sides, but the placed men gained points in the lack of second cutting to be done, and other important details. Very little variation was noticeable in the styles employed, and although some fast times were made some of the fleeces were rather tough and greater speed would probably have been shown had there been more yolk in the wool. Fastest time was made by McManaway, who shore one sheep in lrhin. 37secs., Rewiti running this time very close on one occasion. The following were the placings: McManaway (Tirimea, Eketalnma), 66 points, 1: Rewiti (Bulls), 65 points, 2.

Special prize donated by Messrs Dalgety and Coy., Ltd., Turner (Ashhurst). At the conclusion of the contest Mr J. A. Mitchell (Longburn) announced that he was donating a special prize to the cleanest shearer, this being awarded to Turner.

Commenting on the shearing the judge. Mr K. Duncan, of Taihape, said the display of the placed men was as good as he had ever seen. Both McManaway and Rewiti had given a first-class exhibition, while Turner was classed by the judge as one of the cleanest shearers he had seen at the work, albeit Mr Duncan thought he was a little slow for the sort of shearing the competition required. All the shearers had done well, but the placed men Mr Duncan specially commended, while the institution of the competition itself he considered was a splendid move. \ CALF REARING. BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUB. Additional results of classes in the Boys’ and Girls’ Calf-rearing Club competition are as follow : : Best grade heifer calf (any cross), attention and rearing, for cup presented by Mr A. Hill (Rongotea):— Joan Hill’s (Kopane) Lily 1 Holly Hill’s (Kopane) Rose 2 Lon Tamplin’s (Longburn) Ruby ... 3 Sydney densen’s (Kairanga) Patsy) 4 Jim Plow’s (Longburn) Daisy ... 5 There were nineteen entries.
