AIR RACE ENTRY

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The Manawatu. Centenary Air Race Committee met to-day. the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) presiding. Others present were Messrs W. A. Waters, F. Jackson, D. Smillie, A. Hopwood, J. C. Young, A. H. Honeyfield, W. Cook, H. Petre and C. V. Day (secretary). Mr Waters reported that, last evening, with Messrs Mansford, Honeyfield and Hopwood, he had talked to Squad-ron-Leader McGregor and Mr Walker by means of the radio telephone. The conversation had been very clear. It was stated by the aviators that the Dutch plane would undoubtedly win the handicap event. Messrs McGregor and Walker had been advised to ship their machine by the Niagara if possible and, if that could not be arranged, to ship it by the Monowai. The ma. chine would be leaving Australia on November 8 and would arrive at either Auckland or Wellington on November 12. Various matters with regard to the theatre appearances of Messrs McGregor and Walker were discussed, and Messrs Jackson and Honeyfield were given power to visit Auckland to finalise certain joint appearances of Messrs McGregor and Walker and Messrs Hewett and Kay. Mr Jackson commented that there were quite a number of opinions being expressed as to whether Messrs McGregor and AValker were to receive any money or whether the committee were to receive it all. The committee discussed the subject fully and it was decided that it be a. recommendation that in the event of the funds raised being in excess of the amount required to clear the guarantees, any surplus shf/ild be divided between the pilots and aviation activities in the Manawatu, with a first call in favour of the pilots. It was reported that a committee had been set up to handle arrangements for a big “McGregor-Wallcer day in Palmerston North, the committee being as follows: Messrs Mansford, Smillie, Cook, Waters and Young. Messrs Jackson, Honeyfield and H. E. Edmunds were appointed to finalise the arrangements with regard to the Dominion tour and the theatre appearances of the two aviators. The meeting made the request to the Mayor that he use his best endeavours to have the streamer lighting left in position until after the return of the airmen.
