EXPLORER’S MISFORTUNE.
ELLSWORTH ’PLANE DAMAGED
NEW YORK, Oct. 31. A copyright message to the North American News Agency from Deception Island reports that the engine of Mr Lincoln Ellsworth’s aeroplane, the Polar Star, lias broken down, and the essential spare part is missing. The connecting rod broke down when the engine was started. The only chance of starting the Antarctic flight lies in the possibility of the Wyatt Earp reaching Alagallanes, in the Strait of Magellan, obtaining a rod, and returning in time to find a suitable take-off field within three weeks.
Mr Ellsworth proposed to fly from Deception Island along the unexplored west coast of the Weddell Sea to its head, and then make a straight line flight to the Ross Sea. The distance is 2800 miles, and the flight would traverse 1800 miles of country never yet seen by human eyes.
