CUSTOMS REVENUE

WELLINGTON’S STEADY INCREASE. SALES TAX RECORD. WELLINGTON, Nov. 1. The steady increase in imports and in business turnover generally is reflected in the Customs revenue collected at the port of Wellington, which for the past 13 months lias in every case exceeded the figures for the corresponding month of the previous year. A very substantial increase is shown in the revenue collected in October, which is over £.51,000 above the total for October, 1933, and over £7l 000 up on October, 1932, while it is by far the biggest total for any single month for nearly four years.

The sales tax total, which is perhaps an even better guide to business activity, is again a record one, exceeding last month’s record figure by nearly £BOOO. Taking the yield's from net Customs and sales tax figures only for October there is an increase of £67,022 over October last year, a striking indication of improved business conditions. The net Customs revenue ‘ collected at Wellington last month totalled £241,527, compared with £190,160 for October, 1933, an increase of £51,301. The duty collected on motor spirit last month totalled £36,104 at Gd a gallon, and £24,069 at 4d a gallon, a! total of £00,173, compared with £34,-! 428 at Od a. gallon and £22,960 at 4d i a gallon, a total of £57,388 for Octo-1 her, 1933, an increase of £2785. )

Collections of tyre tax last month totalled £2490, compared with £1139 in October, 1933, an increase of £1351. For the ten months there is an increase of £3911, the figures being £17,865 and £13,954 respectively. Collections of sales tax in October totalled £70,214, a new record for the third successive month, compared| with £53,953 for October, 1933, an increase of £16,261. In September this year the figure was £62,502, in August £62,054, and in July £59,032. The total for the ten months is £577,223, compared with £347,248 for the same period of last year. This tax came into operation on February 10, 1933, and the total so far collected at Wellington is £1.037,160. Beer excise collections for October totalled £5726, compared with £5830 for October, 1933, a decrease of £lO4.
