MANAWATU CONVENTION
PAHIATUA, Nov. 1. The annual convention of the Manawatu District of the W.C.T.U. was continued yesterday. Mrs H. Paterson presided. Reports were presented on the work of the movement by the district executive and by representatives of Feilding, Levin, Palmerston North, Foxton, Ballance and Pahiatua branches. Noontide devotions were conducted by Mrs Spence (Feilding). At the opening of the afternoon session Miss M. Moore (Palmerston North), superintendent of the Band of Hope and Young People’s Department, presented a report on temperance work among the young people, stressing its .outstanding importance. Her views were warmly commended by various delegates and a hearty vote of thanks was carried. An invitation for the next convention was given by Levin. This was accepted with acclamation. Mrs T. E. Taylor delivered an inspiring address, emphasising that what was needed was scientific temperance. On the motion of the president a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Taylor was carried. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—District president, Mrs H. Paterson (Pahiatua); vice-president, Miss Moore (Palmerston North) ; secretary, Mrs Young; treasurer, Mrs Kennerley. Mrs Paterson thanked all who had contributed to the success of the convention, and the visitors expressed, themselves much indebted to the Pahiatua people for their hospitality. The convention concluded with the singing of a hymn and prayer led by Mrs T. E. Taylor.
